Repeat Formation Tester vs. Full Production Test
A question that usually comes up is whether a Repeat Formation Tester (RFT) [generally referred to as MDT, which specifically refers to the tool from Schlumberger] can replace a full Production Test [generally referred to as DST or well test]. Although the principle of operation of these two techniques can be considered similar -creating a pressure disturbance in the reservoir by moving fluids to obtain reservoir parameters, as well as collecting fluid samples- one must keep in mind the large difference of the volume probed by either technique. The following image illustrates in a very basic way the mode of operation of each technique.
One can then conclude that these two techniques are complementary rather than one being a substitute for the other. Careful consideration to the overall program objectives must be taken into account before deciding on one versus the other.
